Moronobu drew the pictures for the first Japanese picture-book featuring flowers and birds. Entitled Kachō E-Zukushi (i.e., Collection of Pictures of Flowers and Birds), it was published in 1683. In 1884, most of the pictures in this book were republished under the title Kachō Shinan (i.e. Flower and Bird Guide). The latter are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Moronobu’s drawing style was influenced by Chinese art in which the shapes of the flowers and birds were drawn only semi-accurately. They were colored only in shades of gray because full-color printing was not possible in Japan in 1683.
